The Curious Horns
Client: The Pacific Place, Hong Kong
Completion: May 2014
A public installation commissioned by the Pacific Place Hong Kong, in collaboration with the RIBA HK Chapter, the Curious Horns celebrates the 25th anniversary of Prestigious Shopping Mall. Located at the atrium court at the mall, the installation features a dozen over-sized hanging horns with interviews of renowned local socialites and motion sensing interactive lighting.
"A CALL to SHOP - A Concept celebrating the Hong Kong shopping culture."
Horns were used in the ancient times as signaling instruments for hunting, and we think shopping is actually a new form of hunting, a modern form of hunting. Therefore we use the horns as a CALL to SHOP.
The installation reinterprets traditional weaving craftsmanship with modern construction techniques in a contemporary style.
360-degree-videos are projected onto the internal walls of the big horns, while the small horns are equipped with motion sensors, lighting and mirage mirrors to create an interactive experience, piquing the curiosity of the shopping mall visitors.
All these surprises are contained within the horns and cannot be seen from afar, you have to be curious, to step into the horns and discover them.
"The Big Horns"
This large-scale installation features a dozen oversized musical horns hanging from the atrium ceiling.
Visitors can choose to immerse themselves in the 360° video on the internal walls of the three big horns. These videos were prepared by the mall, showcasing interviews of several celebrities in town.
"Interaction with people"
The hints of video, sound, and lighting diffused from within the big horns induce curiosity of the shoppers, who will be eager to find out what’s happening inside.
"Curious and surprises"
Each small horn houses a motion sensor, the LED ring lights up once a visitor is sensed beneath it.
'' Small Horns - Mirrors''
The visitors may also choose to explore the multifaceted imagery of themselves in the smaller horns, which contain illusionary mirrors animated with the interactive lighting.
Every hovering horn carries a surprise awaits to be discovered.
The hints of video, sound, and lighting diffused from within the horns induce curiosity of the shoppers, who will be eager to find out what’s happening inside.
Similar to the experience of hunting or shopping, one observes, make choices and decides
his next step.
Each small horn houses a motion sensor, and the LED ring lights up once a visitor is sensed beneath it.
As you look up and you’ll realise a piece of illusionary mirror floating above.
In the mirror you will see different faces of the shoppers, and a fanciful reflection of the surroundings.
A substantial relationship is gradually built up between the artwork and the shoppers -
- one will find himself not only wandering about a prescribed environment, but he can also actively contribute and change his surroundings spaces.
'' Hubs of activities''
Spatially the installation activates the large atrium space and brings down the volume of this huge atrium space by creating little hubs of activities underneath all the horns. It is a space for people to come and gather, interact and play.
The installation established a striking, unique and innovative exhibition display design that is very different to the typical commercial exhibition around shopping malls in Asia. It has successfully captured the casual shopper's attention and provided great fun for the visitors.
It helps to show the client's corporate vision and style to bring art into a shopping mall public space environment, and reflect their respect for spatial design which will be greatly valued by the public.
