PUBLIC SPACE

Ko Shan Theatre Revamp

Client: Ko Shan Theatre LCSD
Completion: June 2020

A revamp to the public areas of Ko Shan Theatre Old Wing, HIR seeks to create vibrant spatial experience with a refreshing dash to rejuvenate the overall mood of the Chinese Opera performing venue.

Red and swirls

The design of the new amenities took inspiration from the dynamic and majestic rotational movement of the opera performers: the circular swirls, swivels, and fluidic curves. The colour of the design is inspired by the makeup of Opera performers: the white base, the shy red gradient blush and grey shades, accented by patches of black.

The design of the new amenities took inspiration from the dynamic and majestic rotational movement of the Cantonese opera performers: Circular swirls and fluidic curves.

Stratified into horizontal ribbon-like bands, the counters are sculpted volumetrically with in-and-outs, cladded in aluminium panels that bend sinuously to shape the recesses for disabled as well as a sliding door.

The terrazzo countertop was made of stone aggregates recycled from the old counters in the theatre, symbolically inheriting the legacy from our past.

The colour is inspired by the makeup of Cantonese Opera performers: White base and the red colour around the eyes that fades down to the bottom of cheeks, as well as the grey shades accented by patches of black. We utilised aluminium panels that are coloured in a gradient, accentuating the curvilinear form that shimmers in sunlight.

The new designs reinterpreted our traditional performing arts into a series of uplifting and functional spaces, transforming the seemingly old art forms into a contemporary spatial design.
